Abstract:

In precision weldment manufacturing processes, fixture concepts are increasingly used which are able to control the geometric variation before welding, compensate for the distortions caused by the welding process and facilitate the geometric verification of the weldments after assembly. This review is an exploratory study on intelligent fixture design as a novel approach that links CAD-based product models, GD&T semantics, process knowledge of welding, inspection data and analysis of process variation. The literature reviewed revealed significant advances in the model-based definition, digital thread architectures, tolerance analysis, geometry assurance, digital twin, welding intelligence, and machine-learning based production decision support. However, the literature is still scattered. But fixture design is not discussed at the same level as weld distortion prediction, GD&T allocation and the planning and adaptive process control for inspection. Intelligent approaches have been described that provide traceability, assist manual tolerance interpretation, and facilitate data-driven decisions for weldment quality that are made by the designer, but it remains a challenge to integrate with compliant assembly physics and fixture locator reasoning and closed-loop metrology. There is a need for more stringent validation in the field for real GD&T schemes, production variation data, and adaptive fixture actuation on welded assemblies.
